The General Archive

The General Archives Department operates under the authority of the President of the High Court of Cassation and Justice.

The day-to-day work of the staff of the General Archives is organised and coordinated by the Archivist of the High Court of Cassation and Justice.

The General Archives are staffed by civil servants, specialist auxiliary staff and contract staff, as laid down in the Staff Regulations.

The duties, powers and responsibilities of the staff of the General Archives are laid down in the job description of each post, with the expert opinion of the National Archives. The general duties and powers of the General Archives are established in accordance with the legal provisions on archival activity.

The General Archives performs the following main tasks:

  • ensures the smooth running of all activities related to the organisation, processing, record-keeping, preservation, protection and exploitation of the archival collections held by the High Court of Cassation and Justice;
  • ensures, under the conditions and within the limits of the law, the exercise of the right of access of natural and legal persons of public and private law to the archival collections held by the High Court of Cassation and Justice;
  • provides technical-scientific support, in the archival field, for the fulfilment of essential tasks of the High Court of Cassation and Justice;
  • administers and operates databases specific to the digitalisation process of the archival fonds administered.
